Are You Ready for Your Next Overland Adventure?

Life on the road is challenging, however, it is often the overcoming of challenges that make Overlanding such a rewarding experience. Most adventure enthusiasts acknowledge that there will likely be some obstacles to overcome while trekking off of the beaten path. Due to these challenges, our team at Truck Brigade created a guide that would benefit your journey ahead. In our guide, you will find helpful tips and advice to enhance your future adventures.

Key Features to Consider for Your Next Overland Trip:

  • Good Eats – Are you intending on eating off of the land? If not, it is important to ensure that you have access to meals and an efficient way to prepare them.

  • Fuel and Water - Making sure that you have access to fuel and clean drinking water will be key to a successful trip.
  • Transportation of Goods– Having a safe and secure way to transport your overland gear from Point A to Point B makes for much happier passengers and a better overall experience.
  • Recovery Gear – Are you prepared for the unexpected terrain you may encounter?
  • Camping – Have you mapped out locations to lay your head at night or are you winging it? Do you have the appropriate Tent to withstand the elements?

Of course, as with any Overland Trip, the requirements to be met will be dependent on the length of your adventure along with a variety of other things. This guide is not intended to be a “One Size Fits All” and is more-so to assist with making sure that the basics are covered. Continue reading below for a more in-depth review of each category.

Good Eats:

Shows like “Naked and Afraid”, “Survival” and “Alaska; The Final Frontier” may make the idea of living off of the grid tempting but we can assure you, it’s not for the faint of heart. While we are certainly advocates for being self-sufficient, we also believe in being well-prepared. Which leads us to our first topic of consideration for your Overland Trip… Good eats.

For starters, review the amount of time you will be spending on your journey and also take into consideration how far you will be from “civilization”… For some, you will be 100+ miles away from the nearest town, while others may only be minutes from the closest McDonalds. Regardless, ensure that you have enough food for you and your passengers. Not only do you need to ensure that you have enough food, but you also need an efficient way to store it, as well as prepare it. Dry goods are by far the most convenient foods as they have no requirements (simply store in a ROAM Rugged Case and you’re good to go), however if you’re like us, you likely enjoy foods that require refrigeration and cooking. For your refrigeration needs you have the choice of a utilizing a standard Cooler or spending a little more for a Electric Fridge / Cooler.

If you’re in need of a standard cooler, we would recommend checking out the ROAM Rugged Coolers. These are available in 3 sizes: 20QT, 45QT, and 65QT, with each model featuring a weather-tight seal and premium materials to yield 8-day ice retention! Other beneficial features that the ROAM Rugged Coolers sport include a drain plug and latches that can be flipped with a single finger. Perhaps you’re looking for an electric cooler, in which case we highly recommend considering a Dometic Electric Cooler. Dometic Coolers are available in a variety of sizes and have the ability to take things to the next level.

Now that we’ve discussed adventure gear that can keep your food fresh and edible, let’s quickly review a product that will allow you to enjoy the same foods that you do at home, with possibly even more convenience! The Tembo Tusk Adjustable Leg Skottle Grill Kit is an innovative product that is capable of cooking up anything that can be prepared in a pan, skillet, grill, or stove. Sausage, bacon, eggs, and hash browns is a great example for breakfast. Lunch or dinner can be as easy as steak, stir fry veggies, and chopped potatoes. Regardless of the food you are ready to cook, you’ll enjoy 18-inch diameter cooking disc that makes preparing both small and large meals for family and friends a breeze. When you purchase the Tembo Tusk Adjustable Leg Skottle Grill Kit from Truck Brigade, the kit will include the Tembo Tusk Skottle itself, along with adjustable legs, 10,000 BTU Kovea Scout Stove, and a BludeRidge Overland Carry Bag. It’s important to note that the Tembo Skottle is commonly used with Coleman Propane tanks.

Fuel and Water:

It goes without saying that access to fuel and clean drinking water is among the most important things, regardless of how long your endeavor will last. For some, they may feel that additional fuel storage is not necessary for their trip however we feel it’s better safe than sorry. One of the most efficient ways that we prefer to transport fuel is the RotoPaX Fuel Containers. Truck Brigade offers a variety of sizes to best fit your needs, such as the RotoPaX 1 Gallon Fuel Container, RotoPaX 1.75 Gallon Fuel Container, RotoPaX 2 Gallon Fuel Container, RotoPaX 3 Gallon Fuel Container, and lastly the RotoPaX 4 Gallon Fuel Container. RotoPaX containers are extremely versatile and can be stored in a variety of locations. We often see them mounted to a Roof Rack or Bed Rack. Fun Fact, RotoPaX are the only rotational molded, EPA and CARB compliant container on the market.

While RotoPaX is widely known for their Fuel Packs, it’s important to note that they also offer Water Packs as well. RotoPaX Water Packs are available in similar sizes, such as the 1 Gallon RotoPaX Water Container, 1.75 Gallon RotoPaX Water Container, and 2 Gallon RotoPaX Water Container. While RotoPaX products could very well be the solution to both your fuel and water needs, we would like to point out a revolutionary Water Storage Container that has truly changed the game… the LifeSaver Jerry Can. The LifeSaver Jerrycan 20000UF is a water purifier and storage container that has the ability to filter up to 5,282 U.S. gallons of drinking water. It has been rigorously tested to remove viruses, cysts, parasites, and other contaminates instantly. What this essentially means is that you can turn multiple sources of water including lakes, rivers, streams, etc. into clean drinking water immediately. The LifeSaver Jerry Can is a highly recommended product for any Overlander or Outdoor enthusiast.

Transportation of Goods:

Creating a list of needed essentials for your Overland Adventure is only half of the battle, the other part comes in when it’s time to actually load up the rig. We’ve all seen it before on the highway… that vehicle who looks like the ultimate liability. You know, the one who possibly moved ALL of his belongings out of his house and rather than using a moving service or renting a U-Haul, decided he would bungee it all in his truck bed… you don’t want to be that person and fortunately for you, we’re not going to allow you to be.

When it comes to transporting goods, there’s various methods. Some of the most efficient ways to maximize your vehicle’s carrying capacity is by utilizing a Roof Rack or Bed Rack. The PrinSu Roof Rack is highly desired and currently one of the most popular Overland Roof Racks available on the market. The PrinSu Rack features an innovative design that not only enables you to maximize your carrying capacity but also compliments the appearance of your vehicle. The PrinSu Rack can be used to secure a variety of Overland Gear such as RotoPaX Containers, MAXTRAX Boards, Roof Top Tents, and much more. The PrinSu’s modular design allows it to cater to your needs and the endless PrinSu Accessories ensure that your get the most out of your application.

Let’s say you already own a Roof Rack or perhaps you don’t and have no desire to put one on the rig. An alternative option to explore would be a Bed Rack. Overland style Bed Racks have been designed with the outdoor enthusiast in mind, so rest assured this option is suitable. When it comes to Overland Bed Racks (a.k.a. Offroad Bed Racks), one of our favorites is the Leitner DesignsFORGED Bed Rack. Leitner’s FORGED Bed Rack is considered the world’s toughest modular Truck Bed Rack on the market, and it offers the ability to transport nearly any gear you could imagine. The Leitner FORGED Bed Rack boasts the following weight ratings: 400 lbs. off-road, 800 lbs. on road, and 1,400 lb. static while weighing in at only 85 lbs. While the Leitner Truck Bed Rack is amazing in itself, it’s the Leitner Accessoriesthat truly put you in control of your next adventure. The Leitner GearPod and Leitner GearPod XL can be incorporated to your Leitner Bed Rack and will keep your gear safe and dry at all times, while Leitner Universal Mounting Plates enable you to secure RotoPaX, Shovels, an Axe, and so much more. The two owners of Truck Brigade each run a Leitner Bed Rack on their personal vehicles, and they wouldn’t have it any other way!

Recovery Gear:

No one enjoys having their day cut short due to getting their rig stuck… or worse, breaking components due to not having the resources to efficiently get your vehicle unstuck. This is why Recovery Gear plays a crucial part in the success of your journey. There’s a couple of options to explore when it comes to recovery gear and depending on your budget, combining the two would likely be highly recommended if you plan on really pushing the limits out there.

The most commonly known form of Recovery Gear out there is the Winch. They say a dog is man’s best friend and I think it’s safe to say a Winch is the offroad enthusiasts. Truck Brigade has partnered with some of the most reputable Winch manufacturers, such as WARN Industries and Smittybilt. Winches are available in a variety of sizes and the correct one for you will be based on the weight of your vehicle along with the intention of use. Outside of the Winch is a simpler form of Recovery Device, however it has proven to be extremely effective by offroad warriors around the world. That device would be no other than the MAXTRAX MKII Recovery Board. MAXTRAX Recovery Boards are known for being one of the most innovative and lightweight vehicle recovery devices available on the market and have now rightfully claimed the title as the safe, simple, quick and easy method of vehicle recovery. MAXTRAX Recovery Boards are injection-molded with UV-stabilized engineering-grade reinforced Nylon. In addition, each MAXTRAX features deep structural beams that run the full length of the board, allowing the MAXTRAX to easily bear the weight of a fully-laden 4WD over soft terrain. In fact, here’s a cool tidbit - they have been tested at the University of Queensland to wrap completely around a 33-inch tire without breaking.  Each MAXTRAX Board features large aggressive cleats that work by sinking their teeth into the tire tread and the terrain under your rig to provide maximum traction and a firm base. This prevents your vehicle from slipping back into the mud, snow, or sand.

Camping:

The last part of this quick guide will pertain to your sleeping arrangements. As with the rest of our sections in this Blog post, your sleeping arrangements will be contingent on many factors. Regardless, we will discuss solutions to ensure that you and your companions get a good night’s rest. While many enjoy using Campers, Off-road trailers, and even RV’s, we tend to often stick to the basics of Overlanding by utilizing a Tent of some type.

It comes as no surprise that Ground Tents are a quick “go to” for many, considering generations before us utilized them to remain safe from both the weather along with critters. While these are famous for keeping cost to a minimal and provide a great source of shelter, our crew are advocates of Roof Top Tents. One reason many choose a Roof Top Tent over ground tents is due to the ultimate safety they provide. Let’s face it, sleeping elevated off of the ground eliminates a lot of potential dangers that can often be found out in the wilderness. Not only does this elevation work in favor of keeping you safe from critters but it also expands your capabilities of where you can camp. In other words, by using a Roof Top Tent, you no longer have to worry if you have found a smooth patch to lay on. Simply pull over in the desired location and call it a day. This leads me to the next advantage of owning a Roof Top Tents… they enable you to accomplish camping often with minimal set up, typically only taking 1-2 minutes to be completely set up. This perk allows you to spend time doing what you enjoy most, which is relaxing and taking in the wilderness around you. Truck Brigade is proud to have partnered with some of the industry leading Roof Top Tent Manufacturers such as ROAM Adventure CO, Body Armor, Tepui/Thule, Smittybilt, and the list goes on! Remember when choosing your Roof Top Tent, it’s important to determine the elements that you expect to be camping in from time to time. We typically recommend a 4-season Roof Top Tent to ensure that you’re ready for anything that Mother Nature throws your way.
